How long is the incubation period for syphilis?

dantechviews.com – The incubation period for syphilis is the time it takes for the bacteria that cause syphilis to enter the body and cause an infection that causes disease. Syphilis itself is a type of disease that has four stages with different incubation periods.

Syphilis or lion king is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. Bacteria can spread through sexual contact, whether vaginal, anal or oral.

Syphilis can develop gradually and symptoms can vary at each stage. Each stage also has a varying incubation period.

Syphilis Incubation Period

Syphilis is an infectious disease caused by infection with the bacteria Treponema pallidum. Syphilis symptoms generally appear 9-90 days after infection.

As previously explained, syphilis has certain stages with different incubation periods. Quoted from the Syphilis journal compiled by Patrick French, the following is the incubation period for syphilis based on its stages.

Primary Syphilis

Primary syphilis is the initial stage when a person is exposed to the bacteria that cause syphilis. This stage occurs for 2-12 weeks or around 9-90 days, while the incubation period begins 2-3 weeks (usually 21 days) after infection occurs.

Secondary Syphilis

Secondary syphilis is the next stage after primary syphilis. For secondary syphilis, the incubation period for syphilis is 4-12 weeks.

Symptoms that appear are general infections that begin to interfere with the sufferer’s activities. The secondary syphilis stage can last 1-6 months after the first infection occurs.

Latent Syphilis

If syphilis in the primary or secondary stage is not treated, this disease can develop into latent syphilis. Based on the symptoms, the duration of latent syphilis is divided into two, namely early latent syphilis which occurs less than 2 years after the first infection occurs and late latent syphilis which occurs more than 2 years after the infection occurs.

Tertiary Syphilis

Tertiary syphilis is the final stage of the development of syphilis. Tertiary syphilis appears 1-10 years after the initial infection occurs. At this stage, the bacteria that cause syphilis are active again in the body (after remaining silent in the latent stage) and cause a number of health problems.

Syphilis Symptoms

Apart from having a different incubation period, each stage of syphilis also has different symptoms. The following are the symptoms of syphilis based on the stages.

Primary Syphilis

In primary syphilis, the symptoms felt by sufferers can be the appearance of small sores called chancres that grow and develop around the genitals or parts of the body that are infected.

In general, these wounds do not cause pain or soreness and can heal or disappear by themselves. Sufferers usually do not recognize these symptoms because this wound does not cause pain.

Secondary Syphilis

Symptoms of secondary syphilis usually appear after the symptoms of primary syphilis disappear. Symptoms can include the appearance of a rash on the palms of the hands or feet. Sufferers may experience a number of common symptoms of infection, such as fever, fatigue, sore throat and muscle aches.

Latent Syphilis

Latent syphilis is a stage of development of syphilis that has no symptoms. At this stage, the bacteria that cause syphilis are not active, so they do not cause significant symptoms. Latent syphilis will last for months or even years before developing into tertiary syphilis.

Tertiary Syphilis

After the latent syphilis stage, syphilis will develop into tertiary syphilis, where at this stage, syphilis can cause various serious health problems, such as:

  • Damage to brain function, dementia, and mental health problems
  • Diseases and disorders of heart function

  • Damage to the central nervous system, including the spinal cord, which causes loss of vision and hearing

Types of Syphilis

If syphilis is not treated immediately, this disease can cause a number of disorders. These disorders can be types of syphilis.

There are several types of syphilis which are differentiated based on the organs attacked. Quoting from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention page, the following are the types of syphilis:

  • Neurosyphilis, which is a type of syphilis that attacks the nervous system. Symptoms include severe headaches, muscle weakness, difficulty in coordinating the body, changes in mental condition and memory loss

  • Ocular syphilis, which is a type of syphilis that attacks the eye, causing pain, redness, vision problems and blindness
  • Otosyphilis, which is a type of syphilis that damages the ears, causing hearing problems, tinnitus, dizziness and vertigo

In general, the incubation period for syphilis is 9-90 days after the first infection occurs. Immediately treat syphilis at this stage before syphilis develops and attacks other vital organs.

Syphilis treatment is usually done by administering antibiotics to eradicate the bacteria that cause syphilis. During treatment, sufferers are expected to stop sexual activity first until the infection has completely disappeared from the body.
